Að beiðni Samhæfingarstöðvar Almannavarnardeildar og Lögreglunnar á Suðurnesjum biðlar Ferðamálastofa til ferðaþjónustuaðila og annarra sem eru í samskiptum við erlenda ferðamenn að upplýsa viðskiptavini sína um að eldgosið á Reykjanesi er ekki aðgengilegt fyrir ferðafólk og þangað ætti enginn að reyna að komast. Viðbragðsaðilar á svæðinu hafa ítrekað lent í vandræðum vegna fólks sem ekki fer að fyrirmælum, fólk hefur slasast og mikil hætta skapast.

Af hverju er svæðið lokað?

•          Viðbragðsaðilar geta ekki tryggt öryggi og hafa þurft að leggja sig í hættu til að bjarga fólki

•          Svæðið er mjög sprungið og erfitt yfirferðar

•          Þar geta leynst jarðsprengjur frá æfingum bandaríska hersins fyrir mörgum árum. Staðsetning þeirra er óviss en þegar hefur ein sprengja fundist.

•          Gasmengun getur verið vegna gróðurelda. Hér er hægt að fylgjast með gasmælingaspá Veðurstofu Íslands vegna eldgoss og gróðurelda.

Lokanir á vegum

Vegagerðin hefur sent frá sér tilkynningu um lokanir á vegum í nágrenni við eldgosið. Gott væri að koma því á framfæri við erlenda gesti okkar að á Íslandi er bannað að leggja bílum á vegum eins og Reykjanesbrautinni og annars staðar þar sem bílastæði eru ekki sérstaklega merkt. Enn fremur hefur hámarkshraði verið lækkaður niður í 50 á Reykjanesbrautinni.

To those who are in contact with tourists

Why is the site closed?

• Responders cannot guarantee safety and have had to put themselves in danger to save people

• The area is very cracked and difficult to pass

• Landmines may be hidden there from US military exercises many years ago. Their location is uncertain, but one bomb has already been found.

Road closures

The Road Administration has sent out a notice of road closures in the vicinity of the volcanic eruption. It would be good to convey to our foreign visitors that in Iceland it is forbidden to park cars on roads such as Reykjanesbraut and other places where parking spaces are not specifically marked. Furthermore, the maximum speed has been reduced to 50 on the Reykjanesbraut.
