Í gær voru gerðar gasmælingar við Eldvörpin á Reykjanesskaga. Slíkar mælingar eru nú gerðar vikulega sem hluti af viðbragði vegna landriss við Þorbjörn. Breytinga hefur orðið vart og vilja Veðurstofan og Almannavarnadeild Lögreglunnar vara við hellaskoðun á svæðinu en mælingar sýndu lífshættuleg gildi á koltvísýringi og súrefnisleysi í helli.  Margir hellar eru á svæðinu, en hellirinn sem um ræðir er við bílstæði þar sem vinsælt er að leggja upp í skoðun á Eldvörpunum.

Yesterday gasses were measured near the volcanic cones and craters at Eldvörp on the Reykjanes peninsula. Gas levels are now monitored and weekly measurements are carried out as a part of the contingency plan implemented in response to unrest and uplift of ground around the MT. Thorbjörn. Changes in gas levels have been detected. The Icelandic MET Office and the Department of Civil Protection and Emergency Management and strongly advice against visiting and exploring caves in the area. Yesterday’s measurements shoved deathly levels of carbon dioxide (CO2) and lack of oxygen in a cave. Numerous caves are in the area, the cave in question is close to a parking lot that is a popular stop to embark on exploring the volcanic cones and craters.
